face and a gun in her hand. Chris walked forward and pried her fingers from the cold metal, clicking the safety into position before he handed the weapon back to her.
"You did this?" She inclined her head toward the three unconscious men.
Do you see anyone else around? The thought flitted through his mind, but one look at her stunned face made Chris bite back the sarcasm. Just because she couldn't seem to grasp the fact that he wasn't helpless shouldn't make him so angry.
"Yeah, I did it." He shrugged, the adrenaline fading and a seeping lethargy taking it's place. "I told you I had a black belt. Remember, at the day-care center?"
She turned wide green eyes on his face, and her brow creased as she thought back. "You said you were teaching safety and awareness. I thought you meant scream at the sight of strangers. Don't get in anyone's car. That kind of thing."
"Well, all of those, too. But a little karate helps."
"I'll say." Her gaze slid past him again to rest on the three men. She gasped. "The knife. Why the knife?"
"They weren't too talkative, but they did mention the need for silence and speed. I got the impression that they wanted to get rid of me, move on to you, and then get out of town before the sun came up."
"You mean this wasn't a robbery attempt?"
"They never asked for anything. They just came at me."
"Hell's bells," she muttered and tucked the gun into the waistband of her pants. She reached out
